AI and the Future of Your Work: A Gentle Shift

Friday mornings carry a different feel. The pace softens just a bit. The week is largely behind you, and the weekend begins to come into view.

You settle in with your coffee and begin working through your inbox.

Your company recently rolled out a new AI tool. It summarizes your emails. Clean. Concise. Surprisingly helpful. It saves time.

And sitting there, a simple question forms.

Where is this going?

You’ve been hearing about AI for a while. Some say it will change everything. Others say it’s just another tool. Most of us are somewhere in the middle.

The reality is a little quieter.

What’s changing isn’t work itself, but where work begins.

You used to spend so much time searching, scanning, and piecing things together. Now you’re often handed something already started, summarized and structured.

Which means your work starts in a different place.

Think about that inbox in front of you.

What used to require scanning each message, sorting what matters, identifying action items, and deciding what to respond to is now laid out clearly in front of you.

The construction has largely been done.

What remains is the decision.

And this isn’t limited to your inbox. The same pattern is showing up in how reports are written, how ideas are outlined, and how early versions of work are created.

But even in this small example, the change is already visible.

The value of your work is shifting. Less about gathering and assembling, and more about deciding what matters and exercising sound judgment.

AI makes the first version easier to produce. What’s becoming more valuable is deciding what should exist in the first place.

And that shows up in small ways throughout the day.

You read a summary and decide what actually deserves your attention.
You review a draft and decide what needs to change, or what should be left out entirely.
You’re no longer just building the work. You’re shaping it.

That’s a different kind of responsibility.

And over time, it creates a gap.

Some will use these tools to simplify their lives.
Others will use them to expand possibilities.

Those two paths don’t stay close.

It may be worth considering which path you want to be on.

I put together a short paper that explores this more fully, where AI fits in the process and how to leverage it to build strength.

As the weekend horizon comes into view, it may be worth asking:

Am I letting AI do the construction… or am I still owning the direction?

Enjoy the coffee. See you next Friday.
